Paul Gees – tension, balance, risk, stability
On December 12 artist Paul Gees turned 70 and
looks back on an artistic practice of 50 years.
In valerie traan gallery, he presents a selection of carefully chosen artworks, giving an overview of the diversity of his entire oeuvre.
At the same time a detailed book is published (Paul Gees – tension, balance, risk, stability) with an extensive interview, texts and images. The book offers an overview of the achievements of the past five decades and the evolution in the work of Paul Gees: from his performances in the 1970s and the earliest architectural explorations, to his drawings, sculptures and most recent works of art in public spaces.

Op 12 december werd kunstenaar Paul Gees 70 jaar en blikt terug op een artistieke praktijk van 50 jaar.
In galerie valerie_traan presenteert hij een selectie van zorgvuldig gekozen kunstwerken, die een overzicht geven van de diversiteit van zijn hele oeuvre.
Tegelijkertijd verschijnt er een gedetailleerd boek (Paul Gees – tension, balance, risk, stability) met een uitgebreid interview, teksten en afbeeldingen. Het boek biedt een overzicht van de prestaties van de afgelopen vijf decennia en de evolutie in het werk van Paul Gees: van zijn performances in de jaren 70 en de vroegste architectonische verkenningen tot zijn tekeningen, sculpturen en meest recente kunstwerken in openbare ruimtes.

“Paul Gees (b. 1949) intervenes, assembles, combines, tinkers and experiments with wood, steel and stone – the fundamental materials which since time immemorial have been linked to the basic conditions of architecture.
His work has in the course of time not been characterised by changes of style but by consistent and gradual continuing work on a rhizomatous oeuvre, growing out of an awareness regarding the intrinsic beauty of matter, heightened by interventions that continue to put pressure on the matter and ‘our’ mind.”

Since 1980, Gees has been exploring the relationship between nature and culture in his work. His sculptures consist of thoughtfully composed compositions in which balance, tension and a refined sense of proportion predominate. The well-considered use of wood, metal and stone is striking. Metal acquires a constructive and space-defining significance, well dimensioned wood forms a dynamic component and unprocessed stone provides natural mass. The confrontation between these traditional materials creates tension-filled contrasts in a fragile balance.

Sinds 1980 onderzoekt Gees in zijn werk de relatie natuur-cultuur. Zijn sculpturen komen neer op bedacht samengestelde composities waarbij evenwicht, spanning en geraffineerd gevoel voor verhoudingen de boventoon voeren. Daarbij valt het weloverwogen gebruik van hout, metaal en gesteente sterk op. Metaal krijgt een constructieve en ruimte-omschrijvende betekenis, goed gedimensioneerd hout vormt een dynamische component en onbewerkte steen zorgt voor natuurlijke massa. Uit de confrontatie tussen deze traditionele materialen ontstaan spanningsvolle tegenstellingen in een breekbaar evenwicht.
